Scones Competition Rules
There will be two categories for this year’s competition: Traditional and Modern. Scones will be judged on: Taste, Texture and Appearance.
Traditional: The original scone was round and flat, usually as large as a medium-sized plate. It was made with unleavened oats and baked on a griddle (or girdle, in Scots), then cut into triangular sections for serving. Today, many would call the large round cake a Bannock, and call the triangles scones. In Scotland, the words are often used interchangeably.
Modern: Similar in basic recipe as the plain scone, a fruit scone allows the baker to add their creativity with their favorite fruits, raisins, berries, or jams etc.
You may enter your scones into either category. However, the judges may, at their discretion, alter the entry category if they disagree with the categorization by the entrant.
All contestants are limited to one (1) entry in each category on non-returnable separate plates with NO names showing.
Entrants must not use pre-made, store-bought dough.
Each entry must provide six pieces, each at least two inches square or the equivalent in other shapes.
You must deliver your entries to the Central Florida Scottish American Society / Information tent no later than 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2025. Judging starts promptly at 1:30 pm. Winners will be announced shortly after the competition has concluded.
Trophies will be presented at the end of judging each day.
Judging will be on a blind test basis. The judges’ verdict will be final. All entries become the property of the Scottish American Society of Central Florida, Inc.
Prizes for Scones:
Both categories, Traditional and Modern, will be awarded trophies: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Winners will be announced at the main stage, near the ceremony field, shortly after judging has concluded. Trophies can be picked up at the Information/Society Tent.
